Hamm pegged Scholar All-Americans

2015 Apr 13

Cornell junior 125-pounder Scott Smith (JR/Chicago, Ill.) and senior 174-pounder Brenton Hamm of Iowa City have been named 2014-15 Scholar All-Americans by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA).

This is the third such NWCA academic award for Hamm, and first for Smith.

To be eligible for the Scholar All-American award, a student-athlete must carry a 3.2 GPA and meet one of the three criteria: qualify for the NCAA Championships, place in the top six at the NCAA qualifier, or win more than 66 percent of matches and wrestle in 50 percent of the scheduled dates.

Hamm, a kinesiology major, is coming off his second consecutive appearance at the NCAA Division III Championships, where he was one win away from claiming an All-America medal last weekend.

Hamm won his weight class at the Central Region Championships and earned the No. 6 seed at nationals. He went 27-12 in his senior season and compiled a 90-65 career record in a Ram singlet. Hamm was a four-time placewinner at the conference/regional qualifying tournaments.

Smith, also majoring in kinesiology, was Cornell's regular starter at the top of the lineup. He placed fifth at regionals and finished the season with a 23-18 record. Smith enters his senior campaign with 49 career wins.

Coach Mike Duroe's Rams finished 13-8 in dual competition and were ranked as high as No. 11 in the NWCA Poll. Cornell qualified three individuals for the NCAA Championships.
